Dowdell adds climbing threat
Van D’am Racing are excited to announce our second signing of the season with local South Australian Rylan Dowdell strengthening the teams climbing ability.
Starting the sport relatively late at 23, cycling quickly became more than a way to simply stay fit for Dowdell and started racing in 2013. His progress was immense and was capped off with a bronze in the State Road Race Championships in 2016 as well as third in the very competitive Super Series freeway hill climb earlier this year. Dowdell has been racing locally for USG Racing, the same team that we picked Iven Bennett up from 12 months beforehand.
Dowdell is also a valuable domestic and showed this at the Tour of Southland in 2017 when he raced for our kiwi sister- team Blindz Direct. His team placed third in the opening prologue and Rylan spent much of the week on the front with new teammate Jason Thomason, working for their team leader to pick up two stage wins and third overall.
“I’m very excited to be joining Van D’am because it will give me the opportunity to race in a great team and at some of the biggest races in the country. They have a track record of developing riders, both on and off the bike, and I’ll be relying on this to help me continue to pursue my own career aspirations.
Director Lachlan Ambrose is equally as excited about the talent Dowdell presents and believes Van D’am can help shape him to be competitive in the 2018 National Road Series.
When we sign new riders we are always looking at the big picture. With Rylan, we saw not only a talented and determined rider, but also someone who we felt could help add a little maturity to the list. Someone that the younger guys could look up to and learn from off the bike”
The focus of Van D’am remains developing u25 local and bringing in Dowdell will help guide the younger riders as well as help them work for a team leader. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements over the coming weeks.
