Shaun has a long cycling history, riding on the track since he was 6, racing since he was 13 and winning his first national championship at 16. Shaun joins the team after spending the last 2 years with a Melbourne based UCI Continental Team, where he produced numerous results including top 5s and 10s in the U23 Road Nationals (road race, time trial and criterium) and the National Road Series, and multiple stage wins, and second overall in 2014, in the Victorian Road Series.
Asked why he was excited about joining us, Shaun replied “Joining the Van D’am Racing project for the 2016 season gives me the opportunity to focus on my cycling whilst having full faith in the team’s support network. The focus on riders handling themselves in a professional manner on and off the bike, and helping us to be just as successful on the road as we are off it, really appeals to me.”
Who Inspired you to start cycling?
I come from a cycling family, dating back to my grandfather, so i guess you can say it’s in my blood. If I had to pick a single person though, it would have to be Alan Grindal. He is forever inspiring my cycling career.
An old Trek 770 with carbon rear stays, I thought I was pretty cool because not many under 15’s had any carbon at all on their bikes.
What do you love most about cycling?
I love the freedom it give me to get out with mates or to go solo and just ride.
What has cycling taught you?
It has taught me a lot, from organisation and dedication to public relations and even a little bit of business, especially after so many years devoted to the sport.

My two biggest highlights would be my 2008 U17 Victorian Road Race championships soloing to the finish line ahead of a quality field, or winning the 2010 Australian Team Pursuit Championships due to the amount of effort and time going into making a 4 min effort with a close group of friends.
If you weren’t racing bikes, where would your focus be?
I think I would be focusing on my ambitions in the hospitality industry. I really want to open my own cafe one day.
I really like to relax to my music so a lot of acoustic guitar and generally mellow music is what I have playing most of the time. Artists such as Chet Faker, Glass Animals, Electric Guest, Alt-J and Milky Chance. Then there are the times during training that something a little heavier is needed (to help me get through coach Tim’s ergos). Then I’ll turn to Jay-Z, Kanye West, Enimem, Drake and AWOLNATION.
Most embarrassing cycling moment?
I don’t know whether to call it a cycling moment but it was certainly on a bike. I had just learnt how to ride with no hands (3 years old with raining wheels, but that’s beside the point) and called out to my mum to watch me. I turned my head to the right and proceeded to crash head first into the fence.
Interests away from cycling?
Coffee… Certainly coffee, I probably drink more than most but that is the benefit of working in a really nice cafe as well as having your own machine at home. Aside from that; cafe hopping, cooking (desserts mainly) and just relaxing despite having copious quantities of caffeine flowing through my veins.
