Tour of Tasmania Stage 3

December 6, 2019

Stage 3 of the Spirit of Tasmania Tour of Tasmania started with another early morning for the boys due to the long drive from Launceston to the start in Ulverstone. The scene was set for an epic stage of the National Road Series as the trees on the side of the roads were sideways because of the savage winds.

The race got off to an absolutely rapid start, as the neutral finished at the base of a berg which would turn out to be a decisive point of the race. A few riders were caught out of position at the start, as the first hill was followed by narrow open roads along the ridgeline of some of Tassie’s finest hills.

After this section we were only left with Dan, Blake and Suando in the front group, but the race soon came back together with Iven, Ethan and Lachie rejoining as the pace backed off.

Due to some sketchy riding in the crosswinds, Lachie was pushed off the road and flipped over the front of his bike and this is where his day ended.

Going into the first KOM, the rest of the team were positioned well and all managed to stay out of trouble and up the front for the upcoming descent into the valley. It was a battle of attrition as the bunch started the brutal ascent of Gunns Plains.

Tristan and Dan almost managed to stay in contact with the front group over the top of the climb, and finished only 1 minute behind the winner of the stage. The boys rode well all day and kept within close contact of the front of the race at all times. Dave was busy calculating the required effort to beat the time cut in the grupetto, and his group survived by mere seconds!

We hope that Lachie makes a speedy recovery as the extent of his injuries are unknown yet. One more day to go and the thicc boys are looking forward to the criterium and what that will offer tomorrow! Keep an eye on our social media for more updates after tomorrow’s Stage 4 criterium!
